SEO Checklist for Beginners: Google's SEO Starter Guide, Explained (2026)

SEO for beginners checklist based on Google's SEO Starter Guide for Dubai small businesses
Google already wrote the SEO checklist. Most small business sites just never read it.
Quick Answer: the SEO checklist

The best SEO checklist for beginners is the one Google wrote itself, in its SEO Starter Guide: make sure Google can find your pages, write content that's genuinely useful and up to date, give every page a clear title and description, use descriptive links and image alt text, and promote your site so people talk about it. Ignore myths like meta keywords and word counts. Expect results in weeks to months, not days.

Clients ask me some version of the same question every month: "Aakash, where do I even start with SEO?" My answer surprises them. Start with Google. Not with a tool, not with a YouTube guru. Google publishes its own SEO Starter Guide, it was last updated in December 2025, and it's free.

The problem is that it's written for everyone on the planet. It doesn't know you run a clinic in JLT or a cleaning company in Al Quoz. So this is my version: an SEO checklist for beginners, built on Google's own advice, with the parts that matter for small businesses in Dubai and the UAE pulled out, and a few notes from what I see on client sites every week. If you just want the list, jump to the 30-minute SEO checklist.

What is SEO? A plain-English answer for beginners

SEO is helping a search engine understand your website, and helping a searcher decide your result is the one worth clicking. That's it. In fact, Google's guide frames it the same way. There's no secret trick that pushes you to number one, and Google says so directly.

What I like about that framing is that it puts the customer first. It's also why the SEO tips for beginners in this post are mostly common sense once you see them written down. Every SEO basic in this post comes back to one test: would this make the page more useful to the person searching?

Step 1 of the SEO checklist: make sure Google can find your site

Google finds most pages on its own, mostly by following links from pages it already knows. You usually don't have to submit anything. Still, check before you assume.

  • Do the 10-second check. Type site:yourdomain.com into Google. If your pages appear, you're in the index. If nothing shows up, something is blocking Google.
  • Set up Google Search Console. It's free, and the URL Inspection tool shows you exactly how Google sees a page. It's the first thing I open on any new client site.
  • Don't stress about the sitemap. Google calls sitemaps optional. WordPress, Shopify and Wix generate one for you anyway.
  • Don't block CSS or JavaScript. Google wants to see the page the way a visitor does. Block those files and it may misunderstand the page.

One Dubai-specific trap: Google says that when content changes by location, it usually crawls from the United States. If your site auto-redirects UAE visitors, or pops up a country selector before showing anything, Google may be seeing a very different page from your customers. I've found this on more than one UAE ecommerce site. Test it in Search Console.

Step 2 of the SEO checklist: write content that deserves to rank

Google says compelling, useful content probably influences your search presence more than anything else in its guide. I agree, and it's also the step most businesses rush.

According to Google, good content is easy to read and well organised, unique, up to date, and written for people rather than search engines. In practice, for a small business here, that means:

  • Answer the questions customers ask you on WhatsApp every day. Prices, timings, areas you cover, what's included.
  • Write it yourself, from your own experience. Copying a competitor's service page is a spam problem, not a shortcut.
  • Update old pages. A 2023 price list on a 2026 website hurts trust more than it helps rankings.
  • Think about the different words people use. Some search "AC repair Dubai", others "AC maintenance near me". Google matches similar terms, but covering the natural variations helps.

Take Arabic and English searches, for example. In Dubai the same service often gets searched in both languages, and they behave like separate audiences. If your customers search in Arabic, a page in Arabic is worth more than any keyword trick.

Step 3 of the SEO checklist: control how you look in Google results

Write a clear title for every page

Google builds the blue headline of your result (the title link) mainly from your page's title tag. Google recommends titles that are unique to each page, clear and concise, and it suggests including your business name and details like location. For a local business, that's a gift. "Ladies Salon in JLT | Hair, Nails & Lashes | Your Salon Name" tells a searcher everything before they click.

Write a meta description people want to click

The grey text under your title (the snippet) usually comes from your page content, and sometimes from the meta description. Above all, keep it short and specific to the page. I always put the thing that wins the click in there, like a price, an area or "same-day booking".

Use descriptive links and alt text

Link text should tell people where the link goes. "See our Google Business Profile guide" beats "click here" every time. Similarly, put images near the relevant text and describe them in the alt text, so Google understands what the photo shows.

Keep URLs readable

Google prefers URLs with real words, like /web-design-dubai/, over random strings of numbers. But it also says restructuring a site mostly pays off for big sites with thousands of pages. If you have 20 pages, don't touch your URLs for SEO reasons.

SEO myths Google says to stop worrying about

This is my favourite part of the guide, because I spend half my discovery calls undoing these myths. Straight from Google, here is what you can leave off your SEO checklist:

MythWhat Google actually says
You need meta keywordsGoogle Search doesn't use the keywords meta tag
Repeat your keyword a lotKeyword stuffing goes against Google's spam policies
Your domain needs the keywordIt has hardly any effect beyond breadcrumbs
You need a .ae domain to rank in the UAECountry domains only help a little, and only when targeting that country
Longer content ranks betterThere's no minimum or maximum word count
Duplicate content gets you penalisedIt's inefficient, but it doesn't trigger a manual action
E-E-A-T is a ranking factorGoogle says it isn't one

Summarised from Google's SEO Starter Guide.

Notice the theme. In other words, almost every myth is about gaming the system. Google keeps telling us the same thing: make the page good and make it easy to understand.

How long does SEO take?

Google's own answer is anywhere from a few hours to several months, and it suggests waiting a few weeks before deciding whether a change worked. Even so, I'd add some local context. For a brand new site in a competitive Dubai niche like real estate or clinics, I tell clients to think in months, not weeks. A site that's been around for years and just needs fixing often moves faster, especially once the basics on this SEO checklist are done.

If you want a sense of budgets alongside timelines, I've written about what SEO and digital marketing cost in Dubai.

Promote your site like a real business

Google lists social media, community involvement, advertising and word of mouth as ways to get your site noticed. It calls word of mouth one of the most effective and long-lasting. It also reminds you to put your URL on business cards, letterheads and shop signage, which sounds old-fashioned until you realise how many Dubai shopfronts only show a phone number. Promotion belongs on your SEO checklist too.

For local businesses, the biggest promotion channel Google's guide doesn't spell out is your Google Business Profile. Reviews, photos and an accurate map pin win local customers before they even reach your website. My local SEO guide for Dubai covers that in detail.

Google's guide won't make you number one overnight. Following it properly will put you ahead of most small business websites I audit in the UAE.

The complete SEO checklist for beginners and new websites

Everything above, turned into a list you can actually work through. I've grouped it the way I run it on a new client website: set up first, then the pages, then the stuff outside your site. If you're launching a new website, go top to bottom. If your site already exists, start with the quick wins at the end.

SEO checklist setup (do this once)

  • Search site:yourdomain.com and confirm your important pages are indexed.
  • Verify your site in Google Search Console and inspect your homepage with the URL Inspection tool.
  • Check your site loads on https:// with a valid SSL certificate. Most hosts include one free.
  • Find your sitemap (usually /sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml) and submit it in Search Console. Optional, but it takes a minute.
  • Make sure no setting is hiding your site from search engines. In WordPress, that's the "Discourage search engines" box under Settings, Reading.

Keyword basics (before you write)

  • Write down how your customers actually describe what you do, including the Arabic version if they search in Arabic.
  • Type your main service into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions and the "People also ask" questions.
  • Check the Queries report in Search Console to see what people already find you for.
  • Give each important page one clear topic, so two of your pages aren't competing for the same search.

On-page SEO checklist

  • A unique title on every page, with what you do and where you do it.
  • A unique meta description for your main pages, with the detail that wins the click.
  • One clear H1 per page that matches what the page is about.
  • Readable URLs with real words.
  • Alt text on every meaningful image, placed near the text it relates to.
  • Descriptive link text instead of "click here".
  • Links from your strongest pages to your most important service pages.

Content SEO checklist

  • Each page answers the questions customers really ask: prices, timings, areas, what's included.
  • Written from your own experience, not copied or lightly reworded from a competitor.
  • Nothing out of date: prices, opening hours, team, offers.
  • Short paragraphs and clear subheadings, so it's easy to read on a phone.

Technical SEO checklist

  • CSS and JavaScript aren't blocked, so Google sees the page the way visitors do.
  • No country redirect or pop-up hides your content from Google's US-based crawler.
  • The site works properly on a phone.
  • Pages load quickly. If they don't, your hosting is the first thing to look at.
  • Duplicate versions of a page (with and without www, for example) redirect to one preferred URL.

Local SEO checklist and promotion

  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, with the right category, hours and photos.
  • Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere you're listed.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to every review you get.
  • Put your website address on your business cards, invoices, shop signage and social profiles.

30-minute SEO checklist: quick wins

  1. Search site:yourdomain.com to check you're indexed.
  2. Rewrite your homepage title to include what you do and where, for example "Plumber in Dubai Marina | Your Company".
  3. Write meta descriptions for your five most important pages.
  4. Update anything out of date.
  5. Ask your last five happy customers for a Google review.

Where Google's starter guide stops, and what I'd add in 2026

The guide is deliberately basic. It's the foundation, not the whole house. Three things I'd add to the SEO checklist for anyone serious about search this year:

  • AI search. Google's AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT now answer many questions directly. Clear, well-structured pages with straight answers get quoted more. I explain this in Is SEO dead in the AI era? and in my GEO service packages.
  • Speed. The starter guide barely mentions it, but a slow site loses impatient visitors, and Dubai visitors are mostly on mobile. Cheap, slow hosting is often the cause. Here's the web hosting I recommend for UAE sites.
  • Competition. The basics get you eligible. Ranking for "dentist in Dubai" against established clinics takes ongoing content, links and local SEO on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SEO for beginners, in simple words?

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work of helping Google understand your website so it can show it to the right people. For a beginner it comes down to four things: Google can find your pages, the pages are genuinely useful, each one has a clear title, and other people link to or talk about your business.
Start with Google's basics: check your pages are indexed with a site: search, set up Google Search Console, give every page a unique title and meta description, add alt text to images, use descriptive link text, keep content up to date, and complete your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers.
For a new website, start with setup: verify the site in Google Search Console, check it's indexed, make sure it runs on HTTPS and isn't hidden from search engines. Then give each page a unique title, meta description and H1, add alt text to images, link to your key pages, and set up your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers.
It's enough to get the basics right, and plenty of small business sites in Dubai skip even those. Google's own guide covers how its crawler finds pages, titles, snippets, images and links. It doesn't cover competition, Google Business Profile or AI search, so you'll need more than the guide for competitive keywords.
Google says changes can take anywhere from a few hours to several months to show up, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change. In my experience, a new small business site in Dubai usually needs three to six months before organic traffic is worth talking about.
No. Google's starter guide says there's no minimum or maximum word count for ranking. Write as much as the topic needs to be genuinely useful, and stop there.
No. Google Search doesn't use the keywords meta tag at all, so you can leave it out.
Google's SEO Starter Guide says E-E-A-T is not a ranking factor in itself. Showing real experience and expertise still helps people trust your page, which is why it's worth doing anyway.
Not really. Google says top-level domains generally don't matter for Search, and a country domain like .ae only helps a little when you specifically target UAE users. Choose the domain that suits your brand.
Search for site:yourdomain.com on Google. If your pages show up, they're indexed. For a single page, use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console.
