Claude Pro free trial: how the guest pass actually works

By Aakash Pareek · Updated September 2026 · 6 min read
Person using Claude Pro during the free guest pass trial week on a laptop at night

I've sent out two of my three Claude guest passes already, and both people asked me the same question within a day: "wait, this is actually free?"

Yes. And no card gets charged unless the person decides, on their own, to keep paying after the week ends. I want to walk through exactly how this works because I got confused by the fine print myself the first time I read it, and I'd rather save you that ten minutes.

Quick answer

Claude's Guest Pass gives someone a free week of Claude Pro: full access to extended thinking, Claude Code, Projects, and every model in the lineup, at roughly five times the message limit of the free tier. Eligible Pro and Max subscribers can send up to three passes. If a friend subscribes after their week, you get $10 in usage credit, capped at $30 total. Grab a free week here if you want to try it yourself.

What a Claude guest pass actually gives you

A guest pass is not a watered-down demo. For seven days, whoever redeems it gets the same Claude Pro experience I pay for every month: extended thinking for harder problems, Claude Code for anyone who wants an AI pair programmer in the terminal, Projects for keeping context organized across a long piece of work, and access to the full Anthropic model lineup, including Claude Sonnet and Claude Opus, instead of whatever the free tier happens to be running that week. Message limits jump to roughly five times what the free plan allows, which matters more than people expect once they start actually using the thing daily instead of testing it once.

How to get a Claude Pro free trial through a guest pass

You can't just sign up for a guest pass on your own; someone who already pays for Pro or Max has to send you one. That's the whole design of it: it's a referral mechanic, not a public trial button.

  1. Open my referral link.
  2. Sign in or create a free Claude account if you don't already have one.
  3. Add a card when prompted. Claude places a $0 authorization to confirm the card is real; it doesn't charge you anything during the trial.
  4. Use Claude Pro normally for the next seven days.
  5. Decide before day seven ends whether to keep the subscription or let it lapse. If you do nothing, most trials of this kind roll into a paid plan, so put a reminder on your phone if you're not sure yet.
Redeeming a Claude Pro guest pass invite notification on a smartphone

This is basically what redeeming a Claude AI referral link looks like: a simple invite notification, then a normal Claude Pro sign-in.

Only three passes exist per eligible account, and I've already used two of mine. If you want the last one before I run out, the link is the same one throughout this article: claude.ai/referral/r1r89w4Jdw.

The fine print people skip (and shouldn't)

A few details actually change whether this is worth doing for you:

  • New users only. If you've had a Claude account before, even a free one you abandoned months ago, you likely won't qualify for a fresh guest pass.
  • A card is required up front. This is the part that trips people up. It's a standard $0 verification hold, the same thing Netflix or Spotify does on a trial, not an actual charge. But it also means the trial can auto-convert to paid if you forget about it.
  • The $10 goes to the referrer, not the new user. If your friend subscribes after their week, they don't get a discount from it; the credit lands in the account that sent the invite, and only after the person keeps paying.
  • Credit isn't a discount on your subscription. The $10 covers metered, pay-as-you-go usage beyond your plan's included limits. It won't shave a cent off your monthly Pro or Max bill directly.
  • Eligibility to send passes may lean toward Max subscribers. I've seen this described both ways across different sources, some saying Claude Pro subscribers can send passes too, others limiting it to the Claude Max plan. Anthropic's own in-app terms are the source to trust if you're on the fence, since program details shift.
  • There's no separate "Claude Pro promo code." People search for one because that's how trials usually work elsewhere, but Claude AI doesn't run a public discount-code program. The guest pass and referral link are the only legitimate route to a free week right now.

Is the free week worth it, or should you just use the free plan?

Honestly, it depends what you're doing with it. If you're chatting occasionally and don't hit rate limits, the free plan is fine and there's no reason to rush a guest pass. But if you've ever been mid-task and gotten cut off by a message limit, or you've wanted to try Claude Code without committing to a subscription first, the week is genuinely useful for figuring that out before you pay anything. It's also the cheapest way to answer "is Claude Pro worth the price" for yourself, since you get the full paid experience before the monthly Claude Pro subscription cost ever hits your card.

Why I'm sharing my own link

I run digital marketing and AI-tools consulting out of Dubai, and Claude is part of my actual daily workflow, not something I'm recommending because a program pays me to. If you subscribe after your week, I get usage credit toward my own account, which is a fair trade for pointing you toward a tool I already use for client work. I'd rather be upfront about that than pretend this is a neutral review with nothing in it for me.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Claude Pro free trial actually free?

Yes. Redeeming a guest pass gives you seven days of Claude Pro at no cost. Anthropic places a $0 card authorization to verify payment details, but you aren't charged unless you choose to continue after the trial ends.

How do I get a Claude Pro promo code or free trial link?

There's no public promo code. A guest pass has to come from someone who already subscribes to Claude Pro or Max and shares their referral link with you, since each eligible account gets a limited number of passes to give out.

What happens after the 7-day Claude Pro trial ends?

If you added a card, the account can convert to a paid Claude Pro subscription automatically unless you cancel first. Check your subscription settings inside Claude before day seven if you don't want to continue.

Do I get anything for referring a friend to Claude?

If someone you refer subscribes to a paid plan after their free week, you receive $10 in Claude usage credit. This is capped at $30 total across all three guest passes, and the credit applies to metered usage rather than reducing your monthly bill.

Claude Pro free trial vs the free plan: what's the real difference?

The free plan has no extended thinking, no Claude Code, and a lower message limit. A guest pass unlocks the full Pro feature set and roughly five times the messaging allowance, but only for seven days.

Is there a Claude AI free trial without a credit card?

Not for the guest pass. Anthropic requires a card on file to redeem a Claude Pro free trial, even though it isn't charged during the seven days. If you want a card-free option, the ordinary free plan (with lower limits and no Claude Code) doesn't require payment details at all.
